A visit to the De Karina chocolate factory in the Golan Heights

Looking for something fun, and kid friendly to do in the Golan Heights? How about a visit to the De Karina chocolate factory, where you can tour the factory and then try your hand at making your own handmade truffles?

A chocolate wonderland

Last week I was touring the Golan Heights with a family from the USA that came to celebrate two Bar Mitzvahs. We visited some of the usual sites such as the Talmudic Village, Golan Heights Winery, The Golan Experience, tanks from the 6 day war etc. But one of the highlights of our tour was a visit to the De Karina chocolate factory!

De Karina is located in Ein Zivan, a small kibbutz in the Northern Golan Heights. When you arrive you enter a large coffee shop and gift shop where they display all of their delicious chocolates. They also have some interesting sculptures made of chocolate on display!

Factory tour

We chose to do their factory tour and workshop. The tour starts with a short video about the history of chocolate making around the world. Next they take you behind the scenes where the magic happens. We were treated to a demonstration of chocolate making by one of their expert chocolatiers. They don’t permit photography during this demonstration, so I don’t have any pics to share from this portion of the program, but Willy Wonka references are not out of place here.

Chocolate tasting and workshop

After the tour, starts the tasting and workshop.  First you get to sample 4 kinds of chocolate. Next they divide the group into children and adults. Children get to make their own chocolate bars, decorated with white and dark chocolate as well as a choice of other stuff like nuts, raisins etc. Adults get to make their own hand rolled truffles!
